EUtopia

While Europe presents itself as the beacon for human rights, thousands of people are dying at its borders. With a bloody history of colonialism and exploitation, Europe’s self-image seems a schizophrenic utopia. At the same time it is exactly that strong imaginary that makes many newcomers ask in desperation: is this really Europe?

Based on a digital dialogue with many different migrants who were living in Moria Camp at the time, the image below was created. A collective imaginary of the future, distorted, and somewhere between reality and absurdity. But never more absurd than Ursula von der Leyen preaching about solidarity.

This piece is the result of a project called ‘a collective imaginary of elsewhere‘: a research-based digital conversation between artists and migrants about longing and European dreams.
